On the verge of becoming boxing’s next superstar, Abner Mares, of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. by way of Guadalajara, Mexico, has won three divisional world titles in less than two years. On Saturday, August 24, he will return home to Southern California to defend his title against a man hungry to take that belt back, Mexico City’s former champion Jhonny Gonzalez, at StubHub Center (formerly The Home Depot Center) in Carson in a fight which will be televised live on Showtime.

Mares is coming off his strong showing against Daniel Ponce de Leon. Ponce had previously won his belt from Gonzalez.

In the co-featured bout, another of the sport’s most exciting competitors, Los Angeles’ former IBF Bantamweight World Champion Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz, will look to win his second world championship when he challenges WBC Super Bantamweight World Champion Victor “Vikingo” Terrazas of Guadalajara.

This is the third time that Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz will be fighting on the same card as one another, and it shouldn’t be any surprise then that a fight between these two fighters could be brewing for perhaps the beginning of 2014. Golden Boy would surely want to make that bout as big as possible, however, with three shared bills already, there’s only so much promotion and waiting that you can do. You don’t want to wait too long and have the fight stall due to one fighter losing, or another obstacle, as we’ve all seen far too many times as of late.

Both Mares vs. Gonzalez and Santa Cruz vs. Terrazas is a good fight, and hopefully will be exciting scraps, and the crowd should be enthusiastic with all of these hard-hitting, Mexican warriors and champions on the card.
