Al Bernstein: Guerrero’s layoff & jump in weight could hurt him against Aydin

A 15-month layoff and a jump up from lightweight to welterweight for Robert Guerrero combine to give his title fight with Selcuk Aydin intriguing story lines, according to Al Bernstein, who will call the action Saturday, July 28 on the SHOWTIME Championship Boxing Series.

Bernstein, a newly inducted member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, said that Guerrero is the more skilled of the two fighters, but added, “The jump up in weight and the injury induced layoff could make Guerrero vulnerable. And, Aydin is a powerful puncher and is very aggressive.”

Aydin, a 28 year old from Turkey is undefeated with 17 knockouts in 23 fights. “He is not a skilled boxer,” Bernstein said, “but he has genuine power in his right hand. He’ll be winging overhand rights from the start of the fight.” Bernstein added that the 29-year-old Guererro, a champion at featherweight and junior lightweight, will be fighting in the 6th weight division of his 11-year pro career.

“If he can be impressive at 147, that would be remarkable. But this jump up in weight has perils attached to it.”
