Canelo’s Next Fight Set – Alvarez Faces Lara:

After plenty of speculation over the past month, Canelo Alvarez’s next fight has now been made official. Alvarez will be taking on Erislandy Lara on July 12 in the headline fight of a Showtime pay-per-view event from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alvarez vs. Lara is a great match-up, with the #1 and #2 ranked fighters at 154 lbs squaring off. ProBoxing-Fans.com has Lara as the top contender to division champion Floyd Mayweather, and Canelo, who lost widely against Mayweather, in the number 2 contender spot.

This is the fight that most fans were clamoring for in the division. Canelo and his team deserve credit here, because it was widely viewed that they would avoid Lara at all costs. The Cuban slickster has an exceedingly difficult style to go up against, and loads of amateur experience which can’t be replaced.

Canelo is up against a huge challenge here, but in fairness, so is Lara. The two fighters share a few recent opponents, each defeating Austin Trout and Alfredo Angulo.

Canelo vs. Lara is definitely one to look forward to for this summer. However, it’s very, very unfortunate that this fight is going to be on PPV. I’m not sure why every attractive fight is being made a pay-per-view these days.

Canelo vs. Lara would be a great headline event for a Showtime Championship Boxing card, one which would garner huge ratings and bring in new fans with a competitive bout. Unfortunately, on PPV, the fight will never reach the same kind of audience, and only serves to further alienate the fans who are being asked to buy a boxing PPV every other week it seems.

Stay tuned for more updates over the coming days and weeks on Canelo Alvarez vs. Lara.
