Four USA Boxing competitors have final chance to qualify for Olympics in Venezuela

Only one opportunity remains for Team USA’s remaining unqualified male boxers to clinch their spots in the 2016 Olympic Games. The four American boxers competing in the WSB/APB Olympic Qualification Event July 3-8 in Vargas, Venezuela will be welterweight Paul Kroll (Philadelphia, Pa.), light heavyweight Jonathan Esquivel (Anaheim, Calif.), heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) and super heavyweight Brandon Lynch (Albany, N.Y.). Kroll and Esquivel need to finish in the top three to qualify for the Olympic Games while Awesome and Lynch need to win the overall tournament to earn a spot in Brazil.

Team USA Boxing closes qualifying event with two new members added to Olympic team

World Olympic Qualifying Event competition concluded on Saturday in Baku, Azerbaijan. The United States’ squad qualified two boxers in the event – flyweight Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) and light welterweight Gary Russell (Capitol Heights, Md.). Super heavyweight Marlo Moore (Hayward, Calif.) won a bronze medal in the event but needed a first place finish to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games. The United States’ three medal performance put the U.S. squad in third place in the overall standings by country.

USA Boxing’s Antonio Vargas & Gary Russell qualify for Olympics

The United States’ Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Gary Russell (Capitol Heights, Md.) qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games with quarterfinal victories on Thursday at the World Olympic Qualifying Event in Baku, Azerbaijan. After dropping close, hotly contested decisions at the Americas Qualifier in March, Vargas and Russell simply would not be denied in their second qualifying opportunity this week in Azerbaijan. Vargas will represent the United States at the flyweight division and Russell, the second brother in his boxing family to make the U.S. Olympic team, will compete in the light welterweight class in Brazil later this summer.
