Paddy Barnes has quick plans, aims to be world champ by end of 2017

Paddy Barnes can stake a strong claim to be considered Ireland’s most decorated amateur boxer ever….despite a ring manner never best suited to the etiquette of the vested code, writes Glynn Evans. The triple Olympian from the north Belfast interface climbed the rostrum at two Olympics (a brace of bronze medals), two Commonwealth Games (both gold medals) and two European Senior Championships (a gold and a silver).

Olympic boxing results: Tournament concludes with team USA’s Claressa Shields taking home 2nd gold

American Claressa Shields and Netherlands’ Nouchka Fontijn were first into the ring, both with an added incentive to win besides the glory of Olympic gold. For Shields, the prospect of retaining the title she won in London 2012 and firmly underlining her dominance of the Middleweight (75kg) class over the last four years, while Fontijn was eager to erase the memory of her World Championship final defeat to the American in May.
