Devon Alexander-Kell Brook postponed due to injury; Bundrage-Smith will go on as planned

Due to a bicep injury suffered by Devon Alexander “The Great” during training, his championship defense against Kell Brook, scheduled as the main event of the February 23 Showtime telecast, has been postponed. A new date for the bout is currently being scheduled and will be announced shortly.

The February 23 event at the Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit will still take place as scheduled with the card now being headlined by the world title showdown between Detroit native and IBF Junior Middleweight World Champion Cornelius “K9” Bundrage and Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith.

Hopefully Alexander vs. Brook gets rescheduled shortly, as this was a fight a lot of fans were looking forward to. And the boxing schedule has been torn up a bit here at the start of the year with numerous injuries, postponements and cancellations.

Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah was just moved back several months, and of course, Andre Ward’s title defense against Kelly Pavlik was cancelled. Alexander vs. Brook was looming as a juicy, competitive and high profile fight coming up and now that’s been temporarily nixed as well.

At least the card will still take place, as opposed to cancelling the entire event, so that’s a plus. However, Bundrage vs. Smith isn’t exactly a high profile headlining event. Check back with us over the coming days and we’ll be sure to share any updates we have on the fight and when it looks like it will take place.
