Hasim Rahman has joined the ranks of Sky Arena’s first Super 8 boxing tournament on June 4th at The Trusts Arena, Auckland.

This will be the biggest boxing event held in New Zealand since I was involved with David Tua vs. Shane Cameron in 2009. In fact it’s the biggest heavyweight boxing event of its kind.

Five of the eight fighters have now been announced; their names alone make this the biggest card in New Zealand history. And there’s more to come. The fighters will be competing for a share of $500,000.

The line-up so far includes:

HASIM RAHMAN (USA) aka The Rock
PRO RECORD: won 50 (KO 41) + lost 8 (KO 6) + drawn 2
Hasim has held the following world titles and honours:

Lineal Heavyweight Champion
2 x WBC World Heavyweight Champion
WBU Heavyweight Champion
IBO & IBF World Heavyweight Champion (held simultaneously with the WBC Title)
Knocked out unified IBF/WBC Champion Lennox Lewis
He has also fought both David Tua and Kali Meehan

KALI MEEHAN (NZ) aka Mean Hands

PRO RECORD: 38 Wins (31 KO), 5 Losses, 0 Draws

WBO World Title Heavyweight Challenger
– Lost in a controversial decision to Lamon Brewster
Former concurrent Australian Heavyweight Champion
New Zealand’s most accomplished international heavyweight fighter

SAMUEL PETER (NIGERIA) aka The Nigerian Nightmare
PRO RECORD: 34 Wins (27 KO), 5 Losses + 0 Draws
Former WBC Heavyweight Title Champion

MICHAEL SPROTT (ENG)
PRO RECORD: 40 Wins (27 KO) + 21 Losses + 0 Draws
2 x International Prizefighter winner

MARTIN ROGAN (IRE)
PRO RECORD: 16 Wins (8 KO) + 5 Losses + 0 Draws
Original Prizefighter winner and Irish Cinderella man

We will be soon announcing, two young New Zealand wildcard fighters, giving these up and coming fighters the opportunity to be thrust on to the world stage. In brief, our eight prizefighters will compete in seven elimination fights until there is one man left standing, who will then be crowned the SUPER 8 Champion.
