Golovkin vs. Monroe Video Highlights & Results:

Two of the very best fighters in the world showed why they’re regarded as such Saturday night, as Gennady Golovkin, ranked #6 pound for pound, and Roman Gonzalez, #3, each put on impressive showings on HBO Boxing, live from The Forum.

Gonzalez vs. Sosa Video Highlights

In the first fight of the card, “Chocolatito” paid homage to his hero, Alexis Arguello, at the site of one of Arguello’s greatest wins. Gonzalez powered straight through Edgar Sosa, with the referee halting the action after the 3rd knockdown of Round 2. Gonzalez couldn’t miss and couldn’t be stopped, only relenting to kneel down and kiss his fallen opponent, and former sparring partner, on the cheek after the fight had ended.

It was his first major appearance on U.S. television, and he certainly capitalized on it. For those of us who have been tabbing him as the hidden gem of the sport, it looks like the secret’s now firmly out.

Next up came the latest #bigdramashow from “GGG”, Gennady Golovkin, facing a confident if largely unproven challenger in Willie Monroe Jr. Golovkin never ceases to bring the action, and here, he closed the curtains via a 6th round TKO.

At first, it looked as if Golovkin would follow Gonzalez with a repeat 2nd round show stopper. He sent Monroe down to the canvas twice in that stanza, but Monroe survived. From there, Monroe rallied, and began landing clean shots and getting himself into that fight.

That changed in the 6th when Golovkin turned up the heat and aggression once again. After another knockdown, in which Monroe barely beat the count, he told the referee that he wanted out.

In his post-fight interview, Golovkin essentially said he let Monroe hang around and make a fight of it, and that it was his “present” for the fans. He doesn’t want to wait for a big fight, he’s ready for Canelo Alvarez or Miguel Cotto right now, and after that, Andre Ward next.

Whomever Golovkin or Gonzalez fights, we’ll all be watching.
