The great tradition of St. Patrick’s Day boxing certainly delivered this weekend with the middleweight championship fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City between Sergio Martinez and Matthew Macklin. Following the Martinez vs. Macklin results, it’s time to go back to our rankings and update the top 10 of the middleweight division. The co-featured fight of the evening was a super middleweight clash between top 10-15 caliber guys Edwin Rodriguez and Don George, so it’s also time to update the super middleweight division rankings as well. Sergio Martinez is the man in the middleweight division. Of course, that’s not news. There’s probably not another division in boxing where the gap between the number 1 guy and the rest of the contenders is so large. Martinez struggled at times, but when you end the night over the number 2 guy in the division with a crushing TKO thanks to two knockdowns in 20 seconds, it’s hard to dock the guy.
So what does the rest of the top 10 look like now, and how far does Macklin fall? Will Martinez finally land a fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr? Will Macklin get another big date or a title shot? We’ll see about all of that soon enough.
At 168 lbs, Edwin Rodriguez got to formally introduce himself to the world stage. He’s been making noise for a while now, but the win over Don “Da Bomb” George was certainly the best of his career. It’s a worthy enough W to get him inclusion into the top 10 of the division, but how high does he climb? Also, how does he stack up against an undefeated counterpart across the pond – George Groves? Plenty to consider at super middleweight right now, and the rankings have definitely been shaken up a bit.
