The Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Bout Is Nearing Completion as Pacquiao Signs on the Dotted Line
The news has spread like wildfire throughout the boxing and sports communities. Manny Pacquiao has signed his contract to take on Floyd Mayweather, with a proposed date of March 13. The Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight would be the biggest fight of the generation, pitting the two top pound for pound fighters in the business against each other. Of course, both men are in their prime, and with their contrasting styles it promises to be an extremely intriguing bout.
The negotiation of this fight has been a whirlwind, and boxing fans are eagerly anticipating its fully and official announcement. When Pacquiao beat Miguel Cotto on November 14, the president of HBO Sports immediately made a public statement that this bout needed to happen. Then, in a very short time, Bob Arum of Top Rank and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy got together to begin preliminary negotiations.
Earlier this past week, word was released that Mayweather had agreed to the terms of the bout, and that Arum would be flying into the Philippines to see if Manny would be on board as well. It seems that Manny is in fact on board, as he has not just agreed to terms, he has signed his contract signaling he is full force into the bout.
Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Contract Details
Here are some details that have been revealed about the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather match, although official statements have not yet been released:
- The proposed date for the big bout is March 13, 2010.
- The official name of the promotion will be Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, signaling that Mayweather gets the top billing.
- The fighters have agreed to a 50-50 split of money.
- The bout will take place at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs.
- The fighters will wear 8 ounce gloves, and can pick a brand of their choice.
- The location of fight has not yet been revealed, but the three viable options are Las Vegas, New Orleans and Dallas.
A press conference is tentatively scheduled for January 11th to announce the fight. Pacquiao's camp has also said that he will spend the first half of training in Baguio before heading to the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood with Freddie Roach, as he did in his preparations for the Cotto bout.
Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Preview: An Early Look
I think all boxing fans and insiders are surprised at the ease of these negotiations. What is notable is that while the money spit is even, Mayweather gains the prestige of having his time first in the billing. It's a small note but must have been a sticking point during the process.
Of course Pacquiao will choose to wear Cleto Reyes gloves, while Mayweather usually sticks to Grant boxing gloves. It helps to show their contrast of styles, as the Reyes gloves offer Pacquiao more power while the Grant gloves offer Mayweather's battered hands more protection.
One would have to think that Las Vegas is the frontrunner to win the bout, especially if they construct the proposed 30,000 outdoor stadium. Las Vegas is the big fight capital of the world, and both Pacquiao and Mayweather have a long history of fighting their, so it's only logical. However, it would also be appealing to bring in a packed stadium of some 60,000 – 80,000 boxing fans for this huge event.
Pacquiao has been the early betting favorite as the fight has been rumored, but as time goes on nobody should be surprised to see if Mayweather becomes even, or eventually even ends up as a favorite.
So who will win the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight? Everyone will of course have their own predictions, and as I will reveal in a full Pacquiao vs. Mayweather prediction down the line, I expected Floyd Mayweather to win the bout should it get finalized. I simply can't overlook Juan Manuel Marquez, a smaller fighter with less speed and power than Mayweather out-boxing Pacquiao for the majority of their encounters. But more details on this preview and prediction to come in the future!

LOL. If the Mayweather camp thinks that this fight will be a cakewalk then they’re in for a rude awakening. Fraud’s never faced a typhoon fighter like MONEY Pacquiao. Speed: they’re even, punching power: advantage Pacquiao.
I see a 6th round KO of Mayweather by the Pacman should this fight come to fruition. I don’t think Fraud is ready to risk his 40-0 record. Master Trainer Roach will break down Fraud and submit him to a humiliating defeat in the 6th. Soon Mayweather will be exposed as the big fraud in boxing. Three names: Cotto, Margarito, Mosley. Has Fraud fought any of ‘em?
Looking forward to the fight: the best offensive boxer (Pacquiao) vs the best defensive pugilist (Mayweather).
Two years ago, i would favor Mayweather with a UD victory . . however, now, with momentum on Pac’s side (KO or TKOs in his last 4 fights against bigger opponents), i now look forward to him winning either by split decision or by KO.
Keys will be: (1)Power shots from awkward angles (not the straight line shots that defensive specialists pick on) . . both right and left hand i.e. Mayweather has never been dazed with his excellent defense, however, it only takes a couple of good power shots (Pac will get his moments) and we may finally know the extent of Floyd’s brilliance or his downfall; (2) Pac Monster has already been in wars that will serve him well when the going gets tough e.g. future hall of famers Barrera, Marquez, Morales, Cotto (including common opponents Hatton and Oscar . . both of which were blasted by Pac! Interestingly, Hatton gave a couple of difficult rounds against Mayweather and past-prime Oscar almost having a win. Granted that Mayweather easily beat Marquez – the betting odds were correct “4:1 favorite” from the slow moving/bulk up Mexican fighter who was unsuccessful moving up two weight classes); (3) Mayweather camp potentially under-estimate the Pac-man (e.g. one dimensional fighter, no skills, has been beaten/ko’d, can be cut, pick your potential excuses, etc) – they will get a surprise. The hubris of “0″ defeat may prove an illusion. Just like we see in basketball, football, some teams go “0 losses” during elimination and then meeting up with a team with a few defeats early on but won the last 4 games. “Boom” – the team with immaculate record during elimination got beat on the play-offs or finals against a hungry/focused/determined foe with momentum on his side.
Its good to have strong views from either side. That will ensure this fight will be a tremendous commercial success.
Will Mayweather’s defensive wizardry be too much for the Pac Man? Will Floyd be able to glide/move, use effectively his height/reach advantage and hit his accurate pot shots all night? or Will Pac Monster and his current momentum (with the eye for history) be the blitzkreig that smashes the aura of Floyd’s invincibility? and will Pac with his power shots in awkward angles together with right timing get to sneak past Money may’s defense and create a KO? That will be answered, hopefully (i.e. since this fight has not yet been finalized) May 13th! Lets get this on . .
Mayweather has a better skills than Pacquiao, although Pacquiao’s skills are still gaining. There’s a big question mark in my mind as to how well Pacquiao can fight on the move. It seems like Marquez stepping back on him left him open.
Ultimately, I think Floyd WILL LOSE and here’s why: Narcissism. Mayweather will not engage in ugly fight. He’d rather look pretty and lose than look ugly and win. He has been able to handle pressure, power, speed and southpaws, but if you look at the Castillo and De La Hoya fights, when the fights got a little of of hand, he went on defense instead of beating them away (I believe he did have the skill and power to do that, but he’d rather look slick on defense). He was fortunate that the judges weren’t lured by his opponents’ aggression in light of how little he did offensively. A Pacquiao fight is ugly by definition. Pac never has a problem letting his hands go. I can’t see Floyd’s pot shot/escapes winning the crowd or the judges against Pac’s energy. Pac will stay busy and Floyd’s won’t be able to perform at a comfortable pace.
Pacman by decision based on volume and aggression.
Mayweather wins the fight by SD
that´s reality
Pacquiao wins it by KO
that´s fantasy
I hope fantasy becomes reality
floyd gayweather is gay. he is AFRAID of pacquiao.
