Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana Results from San Antonio “Danger Zone”:
Saturday night on Showtime, a four-fight card headlined by Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana took place in San Antonio, Texas. The other featured bouts were Keith Thurman vs. Jesus Soto-Karass, Leo Santa Cruz vs. Cesar Seda and Beibut Shumenov vs. Tomas Kovacs. Check out the full results for the entire event right here.
Broner vs. Maidana Results
Marcos Maidana handed Adrien Broner his first career loss on Saturday night, winning a hard-earned Unanimous Decision in an exciting fight.
Maidana got things going right from the start, coming out swinging from the opening bell, and then sending Broner down to the canvas in Round 2. Broner was badly hurt, and was lucky to survive the round. Maidana though appeared to punch himself out a bit, so Broner was able to get his legs back under him in Round 3.
From there though, Maidana took control of the fight once again. He continually hurt Broner, and Broner continued to act like a punk. At one point, he actually faux-humped Maidana in the corner, in the midst of getting his face pummeled in. He cried wolf to the referee throughout the fight, he flopped on the canvas from a head butt, a move which led to Maidana getting a point deducted, he fought dirty, and after it all, he left the ring after losing without being able to accept the situation.
Maidana sent Broner down again in Round 8, which was also the round he lost a point in. In Round 9, Maidana dominated without knocking him down, and almost had him out. Round 12 proved to be a late Round of the Year nominee, with each man giving it their all.
Really a classless evening from Broner, and once and for all, if you thought Broner was Mini-Mayweather, well, think again. Even the awful judging and refereeing in Texas couldn’t take this one away from Maidana.
ProBoxing-Fans.com had it 115-109 for Marcos Maidana (Maidana received a 10-8 on our scorecards in Round 9 without a knockdown, and we scored Round 8 as a 9-8 for Maidana).
Official scorecards: 115-110, 116-109, 117-109 for Maidana, even the corrupt Texas judges couldn’t steal it from him. Broner then left the ring in a hurry to a chorus of boos.
Thurman vs. Soto-Karass Results
Keith Thurman took care of business against Jesus Soto-Karass, and lived up to his reputation as one of the sport’s hardest hitters.
Thurman earned a 9th round TKO victory, as the referee jumped in to save a badly hurt Soto-Karass, who was left standing but was basically knocked out on his feet in the middle of the ring. Thurman sent Soto-Karass crashing to the canvas in Round 5 with a monster left “hooker-cut”, a somewhat looping left uppercut that just crushed Soto-Karass.
Always game, he jumped right up and kept on forcing the action and making it a fight. But in Round 9, a series of punches left Soto-Karass defenseless, and another left uppercut closed the show.
Thurman is of course an entertaining fighter, and he seems intent on giving the fans what they want. He’s certainly making more fans each time he steps in the ring. Hopefully we see big things from him in 2014.
Santa Cruz vs. Seda Results
Leo Santa Cruz dominated a game Cesar Seda, going on to win a clear unanimous decision. Santa Cruz really dominated the bout, but the scorecards were a little bit closer.
That’s not to say that Seda was uncompetitive. He did some good work with his slicker skill-set, but he didn’t have the firepower to keep Santa Cruz away, and he couldn’t keep up the same pace which Santa Cruz is renowned for setting.
Santa Cruz put Seda down in the 5th Round, and throughout the fight, each man was doing great body work.
Make no mistake about it, Santa Cruz is one of the best fighters to watch in the business. However, he has faced a steady string of subpar opponents. He’s very much overdue to face a top opponent, and has gotten more slack for doing so than perhaps any other big fighter in the game right now.

Shumenov vs. Kovacs Results
Beibut Shumenov made quick work of the undefeated but unknown Tamas Kovacs, scoring a 3rd Round TKO victory. Shumenov knocked Kovacs down three times before the referee waved off the action.
It was Shumenov’s first fight in a year and a half, and his first fight under the Golden Boy Promotions banner. Now, he may get a big money, big stage opportunity against Bernard Hopkins.
Shumenov, who holds a title in the division, would offer Hopkins a chance to unify titles in the division.
