Team USA boxing results: Joseph Diaz Jr, Michael Hunter & Dominic Breazeale in action

Olympic Boxing Results Day 5

On Day 5 of the London Olympic boxing tournament, three Team USA boxers were in action, bantamweight Joseph Diaz Jr in his second fight of the tournament, heavyweight Michael Hunter, and super heavyweight Dominic Breazeale. All three men were matched tough, and would need top performances in order to advance.

Joseph Diaz Jr was in the first fight of the day. He was lined up against the division’s number 1 seed, Cuba’s Lazaro Alvarez, who had a first round bye. Each round was tight, but cumulatively he fell behind on points and couldn’t catch up. Diaz acquitted himself very well in the bout though, ultimately losing by a 21-15 score.

Diaz is certainly a talented and game fighter, and one would think that he really got the short end of the stick here with his draw. If he didn’t have to face Alvarez in the second round, he could have kept advancing quite a bit potentially.

Heavyweight Michael Hunter was lined up against Russia’s Artur Beterbiev. In a tough, bruising and bloody affair with lots of holding and in-fighting, the official scores ended up even at 10:10, which means the judging goes to the countback. At that point, the Russian fighter got the nod.

It’s a disappointing result, because Hunter appeared to be the more technically sound fighter in there. In addition, he had a 1 point lead heading into the final round.

Finally, it was time for Breazeale to get into the mix, and he was also lined up to face a highly touted Russian, Magomed Omarov. Breazeale is a newcomer to boxing, and unfortunately, that showed against the seasoned, strong Russian.

Omarov built up a big 5-0 lead after 1 round, and kept on controlling the action from there. The final tally was 19-8 for Omarov, who tagged Breazeale at the end of the bout and did some extra damage.

Unfortunately for Team USA, that was 3 defeats and an 0-3 day in Olympic boxing action on Wednesday. That means that only four of the nine men’s Olympic boxers for team USA are still alive in the tournament.
