The Hilltop Cup IX held this past Friday was a fun and successful event, and a great outlet for the high level of amateur boxing in the United States. This exciting event, held at the War Memorial Gym at the University Of San Francisco, was filled with boxing supporters from all over the Bay.

Schools and boxing clubs from all over the countr, were keen on showing their best fighters and getting in on the competition. The list of participants included the University Of San Francisco, Santa Clara University, B. Street Boxing Club, 415 Boxing Club, San Francisco State University, Kennel Boxing Club, St. Mary’s University, UC Davis, University of Maryland, San Jose State University, World Class Boxing, University Of Hawaii, Emory University and the United States Navy.

Amateur boxers from all walks of life battled it out in three grueling, two-minute rounds. Sounds of screaming spectators supporting their own filled the Memorial gym while each boxer fought their heart’s out. It was truly an encouraging spectacle of the high standard of boxing in the USA.

The University of San Francisco managed to secure four fantastic wins on this night while Santa Clara University, 415 Boxing Club, Kennel Boxing Gym, B. Street Boxing Club, US Navy, Emory University and San Jose State University were also able to secure wins for their respective clubs and schools.

The fight of the night was given to the bout between University of San Francisco’s own Nargis Shaghasi and Valerie Lo from the University of Hawaii. This bout, explosive from the first round, was a great match between two evenly matched fighters. However, it was Nargis’ quick and powerful punches that led her to victory by knockout against Valerie.

“My opponent was moving a lot and always throwing punches,” said Nargis on her opponent Valerie Lo. “My strategy was to just box, throw my punches, and let my hands go.”

Other notable fights from the event included USF’s Mark Cabreto’s knockout win over Ronald Manuel, Kennel Boxing Club’s Jesus Guerrero’s fantastic win over Ronald Manuel, USF’s Sebastian Doerner’s great win over Ian Peterson, and the closely contested, bloody affair between, now champion, Leanna Racine from Emory University and Adrianna Boursalian.

When all was said and done, the Hilltop Cup IX was a great success, and it’s easy to see that on a memorable night like this, the tournament is a tradition which will carry on for generations to come.
