Saturday night on Showtime, Abner Mares defeated Eric Morel to capture a vacant title at super bantamweight, and bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno defended his title successfully against David de La Mora. Moreno simply outclassed De La Mora, who was overwhelmed and overmatched from the start. Moreno was too quick, crafty and skilled, and displayed excellent defense and precision punching all night en route to a rare stoppage win for him. Mares cruised past Morel, who was game but also overmatched. To his credit, Morel said after the fight that the same thing would have happened to him 10 years ago. Mares looks bigger and stronger at 122 lbs, so it will be interesting to see him step up against better competition there to see how he holds up.
