Thompson Boxing Signs “Magnifcent Seven” Prospects

Already home to unbeaten world champions Timothy Bradley, Yohnny Perez, and championship hopeful Juan Carlos Burgos, who will fight for the WBC featherweight title on November 26, Thompson Boxing Promotions wants to raise the bar even higher in the coming months and years, and to kick off this campaign in style, the promoter has signed seven of the fight game’s top prospects, guaranteeing that fans around Southern California and the world will continue to see boxing’s top talent on a regular basis. Joining the Thompson Boxing Promotions’ team today are Jonathan Arellano, Miguel Diaz, Jhon Ortega, Artemio Reyes, Daniel Roman, Manuel Roman and Sergio Nuñez, who is co promoted with Gary Shaw Productions.

“The greatest asset boxing has is its ability to keep generating outstanding young talent that will keep the sport thriving year after year, and with the seven young men we’ve signed today, we believe we have a roster that will produce multiple world champions in the coming years,” said Ken Thompson, founder of Thompson Boxing Promotions. “This is a big day for these boxers and for our company.”

Jonathan Arellano – Riverside, CA
Bantamweight
Pro record – 6-0-1, 1 KO

22-year old bantamweight prospect Jonathan Arellano paid his boxing dues on the amateur circuit, where his 30 fights saw him competing in the Golden Gloves and in the Under-19 Nationals, in which he made it to the finals of the tournament. But this talented youngster knew that his style was better suited to the pro game, and with an unbeaten record in seven fights, no one is going to argue with him. In his most recent bout, on October 7th, Arrellano outpointed Abel Gomez.

Miguel Diaz – Allentown, PA
Junior bantamweight
Pro record – 2-0, 2 KOs

A member of the Puerto Rican national team in 2008 and 2009, Miguel Diaz compiled an amazing 163 amateur wins that included three Golden Glove titles in Philadelphia and one pair of Golden Gloves in New Jersey. Just 21 years old, Diaz turned pro in January of 2010 with a decision win over Jose Rivera, and followed that victory up in August with a first round knockout of unbeaten former US Olympic alternate Malcolm Franklin in a bout that introduced him to Southern California fight fans.

Sergio Nuñez – Sylmar, CA
Lightweight
Pro record – 1-0, 1 KO

18-year old phenom Sergio Nunez took the amateur boxing world by storm almost as soon as he laced up the gloves, winning the Junior Olympic regionals at 106 pounds when he was just 14 years old. That’s not all though, as Nuñez (50-10 as an amateur) also counts three Junior Golden Glove titles, the BCR world title, and numerous other accolades to his name thus far. In October, he knocked out Mike Cross in his pro debut, and in the future, Nuñez – who will be co-promoted with Gary Shaw Productions – has his sights on a world title.

Jhon Ortega – Londonderry, NH
Junior welterweight
Pro record – 2-0, 2 KOs

Like his new stablemate Diaz, Jhon Ortega was a stellar amateur competitor, earning a spot on the Venezuelan national team during his 145-bout career. Two of his victories were over current world champions Yohnny Perez and Juan Manuel Lopez, and now the 26-year old is ready to follow in their footsteps as a professional. Presently 2-0 with 2 knockouts, Ortega has a bright future in the punch for pay ranks.

Artemio Reyes – Riverside, CA
Junior welterweight
Pro record – 8-1, 7 KOs

24-year old Artemio “King” Reyes has been thrilling fight fans with his spectacular knockout power ever since his amateur days, where half of his wins came before the final bell. As a pro, Reyes hasn’t slowed down at all, winning eight of nine bouts, seven by knockout. Even more impressive is that all of his KO wins have come in two rounds or less. A current student at Riverside Community College, Reyes hits the books as hard as he does opponents.

Daniel Roman – Los Angeles, CA
Bantamweight
Pro record – 1-0, 1 KO

A crowd pleasing fighter with a vicious body attack and knockout power in both hands, Daniel Roman’s pro debut in October saw him destroy Christian Cruz in just 43 seconds. It was just another dose of success for the LA product, whose 65-10 amateur career saw him earn three Silver Glove National titles and a 2006 PAL National championship. Next step for the 20 year old? Glory in the pro ranks.

Manuel Roman – Los Angeles, CA
Middleweight
Pro record – 2-0, 2 KOs

A boxer-puncher who can do it all in the ring, 23-year old Manny Roman may have fast feet and hands, but he also has the ability to stand and trade or knock you out with either hand. This versatility took him to a 50-10 amateur record, and thus far in his pro career he has finished off both of his opponents in impressive style.
