Nearly 70 bouts of action were contested on Wednesday, marking the busiest day of the 2015 USA Boxing Elite National Championships. All of the day’s winners advanced on to Thursday’s quarterfinal round at the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash.

The light welterweight division competed for the second straight day in Spokane and 2014 WSB and World Championship Team Trial silver medalist Tra-Kwon Pettis (Atlanta, Ga.) claimed another victory in his first USA Boxing National Championships. The towering Pettis took a unanimous decision over Abraham Lopez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) in their second round match-up.

The full middleweight bracket competed in Wednesday’s competition and two-time national champion Leshawn Rodriquez (Medford, N.Y.) made an impressive debut in his third straight USA Boxing National Championships. Rodriquez won a 3-0 victory over Kuanysh Niyazov (Staten Island, N.Y.) to move on to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Hometown boxer Patrick Ferguson (Spokane, Wash.) faced off in one of the most fan-friendly bouts of the early session in his national tournament debut. Ferguson took on Manuel Contreras (St. Paul, Minn.) in one of Wednesday’s two heavyweight bouts. Despite both boxers gassing out early, the two kept throwing through the three rounds and Ferguson took the win by unanimous decision.

The first women’s bouts of the tournament took place in Wednesday’s evening competition with the flyweight division kicking off the night’s action. Former featherweight national champion Melissa Parker (Fort Carson, Colo.) made her debut in the lower weight division, battling 2013 youth world championships bronze medalist Marisol Lopez (Stratford, Calif.). Parker carried her strength in to the flyweight division and won a fourth round TKO over the younger Lopez to advance on to quarterfinal action on Thursday night.

2012 Olympic Trials participant N’yteeyah Sherman (Barberton, Ohio) enjoyed a successful return to the national scene, winning a unanimous decision victory over Caroine Carnero (Passaic, N.J.).

Both returning champion Genaro Gamez (San Diego, Calif.) and 2014 National Golden Gloves titlist Maliek Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) advanced on to quarterfinal competition with wins on Wednesday night at the HUB Sports Center.

In the light heavyweight division, both 2014 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Jasper McCargo (Oakland, Calif.) and WSB and World Championship Team Trial silver medalist Julio Perez Campusano (Roxbury, Mass.) both won their tournament debuts in back-to-back bouts. McCargo claimed a unanimous decision win over Xavier Hayden (Minneapolis, Minn.) while Campusano took a 3-0 victory in his battle with Vincent Baccus (Okmulgee, Okla.).

The super heavyweights closed a nearly five-hour session with five bouts on Wednesday night. 2013 youth national champion John Luna (Milwaukee, Wis.) suffered a rough elite division debut, dropping a 3-0 decision to home state boxer M Ramel Clasablanca (Bremerton, Wash.) in preliminary competition.

2015 USA Boxing National Championships competition will continue on Thursday with a full day of quarterfinal competition at the HUB Sports Center.
