Multiple reports are suggesting that Canelo Alvarez’s next fight will come on May 2nd, against James Kirkland. This is after all the reports surfaced that the negotiations for a highly anticipated Canelo Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight officially fell apart after months.

Yet, nothing is official, and the floated Canelo vs. Kirkland rumor could instead be a ploy to try to light a final fire under Cotto and his team to get that fight finalized. At the same time, with the endless and ridiculous swirl of “news” surrounding Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, it’s also been suggested that Mayweather will instead opt for a rematch with Cotto.

That, too, could simply be a ploy to grab some headlines and force a negotiating issue. But as of right now, we really don’t know much beyond the attention-grabbing headlines which are likely meant more for internal politics and negotiating strife than for actually informing fans.

Canelo is definitely fighting on May 2nd. Unless Mayweather vs. Pacquiao happens on that day. Canelo vs. Cotto is definitely off. Unless they agree to something within the next week. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is off. Unless they do the same.

With Mayweather vs. Pacquiao or Mayweather vs. Cotto II swirling around in tandem with Canelo vs. Cotto or Canelo vs. Kirkland, just to mention a few potential scenarios here, would somebody please sign a freaking contract and make something official!

Once one of these fights is signed and sealed, expect the rest of the dominoes to fall into place quickly after that.
