Nathaniel Collins was unsuccessful in his attempt to take the European featherweight in Glasgow, as he was held to a draw by Cristobal Lorente in a thrilling clash. The contest was also a WBC world title final eliminator.

Collins (17-0-1, KO8) was last seen taking stunning fourth-round stoppage of Lee McGregor, Spain’s Lorente (20-0-3, KO8) was held to a draw in his last defence of the title against the unbeaten Ruben Gil.

Collins began at a frantic pace, banking the opening few rounds on work rate and with solid combinations, although Lorente found a combination of his own in round three that got the home fighter’s attention. Lorente took over for the next couple of frames, hurting Collins in round four before a flurry of punches saw him shade the fifth.

Collins though poured on the pressure in the sixth in an absorbing frame where he hurt the champion, and that took the energy out of both as the action slowed in the next two rounds.

The pair were well matched, and took turns to have their successes, with Lorente hitting the target with his left hand in particular in round ten.

After a quiet penultimate round, the two emptied their tanks one last time as the bout came to a thrilling conclusion.

They couldn’t be separated, as both received a 115-113 verdict, and a third judge ruled the fight a 114-114 draw.

Willy Hutchinson vs Mark Jeffers

Willy Hutchinson (19-2, KO14) got back to winning ways on the undercard, as he took a seventh-round stoppage win against Mark Jeffers (20-2, KO7) in their light heavyweight meeting.

It was a superb performance from the Scot, and a slashing right hand started the beginning of the end, and a two-fisted attack forced the referee to intervene.
