The fourth edition of the Junior Open and Youth National Championships began on Tuesday at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev., with two sessions of Olympic-style boxing action. Male boxers in both the junior and youth divisions stepped through the ropes for the first event of 2016 on a snowy, overcast day in Reno.
Four reigning junior world champions have returned to Reno for a repeat performance in 2016. Men’s bantamweight gold medalist Marc Castro (Fresno, Calif.) was the first of the group to take the ring in Reno. He showcased the skills that led him to his world title in his first bout in his new youth division against Rasheen Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.). Castro won a second TKO in the bout, ending the contest with a strong combination to the body and head before the referee called a halt to the bout.
Castro’s world championships teammate, lightweight bronze medalist Harley Mederos (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also took a TKO victory on day one of the 2016 Junior Open and Youth National Championships. Mederos landed heavy shots in the opening round of his match-up with Anthony Soto (Pueblo, Colo.) before Soto’s corner chose to stop the bout.
In the early session, 2015 Junior Open silver medalist Jaydon Vigil (Lakewood, Colo.) dropped a split decision to Dezmond Lucas (Bronx, N.Y.) in their youth light welterweight division bout. Fellow returning silver medalist Rommel Caballero (Coachella, Calif.) had a different outcome in his 2016 opener, taking a TKO victory over Justin Cardona (Salinas, Calif.) in their youth men’s lightweight contest.
The 2016 Junior Open and Youth National Championships will continue in two sessions at noon and 6 p.m., on Wednesday at the Grand Sierra Resort Summit Pavilion. All of Tuesday’s victors will return to action on day two along with athletes in four additional weight divisions.
