Many observers believe Philadelphia slickster Jaron Ennis is the best fighter in the welterweight division, however he only holds one of the four recognised world titles at the weight.
Ennis has been IBF champion since November 2023, after having his interim status elevated following the sanctioning body’s decision to strip former undisputed 147lb king Terence Crawford of his belt.
Much sought after unifications have not been forthcoming for the 27-year-old in the 14 months he has been a fully fledged titlist, though multiple offers were reportedly made to WBO belt holder Brian Norman Jr, all which were rejected.
However, the man widely viewed as ‘Boots’ toughest test at welterweight has this week thrown his hat into the ring.
WBA world champion, Eimantis Stanionis has called for a showdown with Ennis, whom he believes he will “outlast” should they meet this year.
“He’s fast, powerful, and skilled, but I believe in myself and my ability to outlast anyone in the ring.
“The fans have been asking for this fight, and I want to make it a reality.
“Unification fights like this define legacies.”
Though a clash with Ennis would almost certainly be the most financially lucrative for the Lithuanian pressure fighter, he has also insisted he would have no problems unifying against the aforementioned Norman or WBC champion, Mario Barrios.
“Brian Norman Jr. has proven he belongs at the top, and he’s only getting better.
“I know he’s hungry to show the world what he’s capable of. This fight would be a high stakes battle between two fighters who refuse to back down. I’m ready to put my belt on the line to make it happen.
“Mario Barrios is a strong champion who brings toughness and heart into the ring.
“A fight between us would be explosive. I respect what he’s done in the sport, but I believe my skill and determination will make the difference.
“Let’s give the fans a war they’ll never forget.”
With the likes of Crawford and Errol Spence Jr having moved up to light-middleweight, the welterweight division is now wide open for a new face to establish themselves as top dog in 2025.
Many pundits felt certain that this would be Ennis, however question marks have been raised after a shaky performance in his rematch with Karen Chukhadzian in November.
