Johnny Fisher believes he got his game plan wrong against Dave Allen on Saturday.

Fisher suffered the first defeat of his professional career, blown out by Allen in the fifth round of their rematch at the Copper Box Arena.

‘The Romford Bull’ won their first fight by split decision in Riyadh in December and concedes his decision to alter his approach in the rematch proved costly.

“I thought I was boxing to the game plan that we set and it was going well,” the 26-year-old told IFLTV.

“But that’s not naturally who I am.

“I’m not a back foot boxer and it made sense after the first fight to think we’ve not got to get involved as much and box Dave on the back foot.

“But what I learnt pretty quickly in there is, sometimes that’s more taxing than just being who I naturally am which is being a [come] forward fighter.

“No matter what you say about the first fight, Dave was in a bit of bother there as well.

“It probably would have been better to just go out and do exactly the same as what I did.

“The plan was to box on the back foot, but I’m not a back foot boxer, I never will be.

“I’m an exciting come forward fighter and I probably got that wrong.”

Fisher was dropped heavily in the fifth round and despite beating the referee’s count, a brutal follow-up assault from Allen had the Essex man face first on the canvas and the bout was waved off, just as the towel came in from his corner.

There is an option for a third showdown, but Eddie Hearn, who promotes both, told media afterwards including Pro Boxing Fans that it would not take place next.

“I can see the trilogy one day,” Hearn said.

“But not next in my opinion.

“When you get a chance to run it back like we did tonight, it’s like, ‘should we have taken the rematch tonight?’

“I still think the answer is yes, because we won the first fight, it was very close.

“But if you’re going to the levels that we hope you will, you learn from the first fight and you beat Dave Allen in the rematch.

“He wasn’t good enough in that fight tonight.

“Therefore you don’t want to, having been knocked out like that, with the inexperience of Johnny Fisher, just automatically go back into number three.”
