Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney have signed to fight each other later this summer.

Lopez and Haney will meet on August 16 in Saudi Arabia and have both inked contracts to fight each other at catchweight of 145lbs, according to BoxingScene.

Given the catchweight, it seems unlikely that Lopez’s WBO super lightweight title will be at stake.

The 27-year-old defended the belt for the third time on the same card as Haney on May 2 in Times Square, outpointing Arnold Barboza Jr.

‘The Takeover’ had been hoping to secure a meeting with unified WBA and IBF welterweight champion, Jaron Ennis, however the Philadelphia man reportedly turned down the fight and will move up to 154lbs if he fails to secure a unification, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.

That left the Brooklyn man to look elsewhere and a bout with fellow two division champion Haney appeared the next logical step.

The clash had looked in doubt after a series of posts from Lopez on X which appeared to criticise Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi Arabian boxing chief who will be bankrolling the event.

Lopez made a public apology to Alalshikh on X: “To His Excellency @Turki_alalshikh, I take full responsibility for my inappropriate words on the ‘X app.’

“I publicly apologize to HE; I will conduct myself with greater respect, humility, and professionalism. Sending love and light to all. TY.”

Haney saw off former super lightweight world champion, Jose Ramirez in Times Square, bouncing back from his brutal fight with Ryan Garcia, which was overturned from a majority decision defeat for Haney to a no contest after Garcia failed a drugs test.

The plan was for Haney to rematch Garcia in October, but after the 26-year-old lost to Rolly Romero in the main event of the Times Square card, those intentions went up in smoke.

According to Lopez, ‘The Dream’ had no other option but to seek a showdown with him.

“Haney got no other option but to ask for Teofimo,” Lopez told FightHype.com.

“So we’ll see what happens.

“We’re ready for anybody.”
