Jaime Munguia says his positive drugs test has come as a “complete surprise.”
On Thursday, Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger reported that Munguia returned an adverse analytical finding for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites in a urine sample taken by VADA, the day after his unanimous decision win over Bruno Surace in their rematch on May 3 in Saudi Arabia.
The Mexican insists he is a clean athlete and confirmed that he would be requesting analysis of the B-Sample.
“Throughout my boxing career, I have undergone numerous anti-doping tests and have never tested positive,” the 28-year-old said in a statement.
“I was tested twice during this training camp, and both results came back negative, which is why receiving this notification of an adverse finding has been a complete surprise to me.

“Several experts have explained that there are multiple ways contamination can occur, and I am fully willing to undergo any retroactive, current, or future testing to demonstrate that I have always been a clean athlete.
“I will not make any further comments on this matter until the process is concluded with results of the B Sample.”
Munguia, a former world champion at super welterweight, suffered a shock fourth round knockout loss to France’s Surace in their first meeting in his hometown of Tijuana in December, the first defeat of his professional career.
Surace called for the result of the bout to be overturned with immediate effect.

“I’m shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance,” the 26-year-old told The Ring.
“There’s no place in boxing for cheating; the sport is dangerous enough already.
“I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguia fair and square in December and I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May.

“He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field.
“I trust that this result will be overturned immediately.”
