Caleb Plant left the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas with his career in tatters, as Jose Armando Resendiz scored an upset points win to take his WBA interim super middleweight title on Saturday.

Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) came in to this one as a former IBF world champion, but had been inactive in recent times. He had to get off the deck to stop Trevor McCumby last September in his most recent outing. Mexico’s Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) held a 2023 win against former world champion Jarrett Hurd, but wasn’t expected to defy the odds here.

It started well enough for Plant as he put his punches together well and outworked the visitor, but the 26-year-old grew into the contest, with the third seeing a right hand connecting flush on Plant’s chin.

Resendiz was warming to his task, and in round six, he landed with another right hand that troubled ’Sweethands’ and had him wobbled.

The underdog was warned for use of the head in the eighth, but continued to have success, a volley of punches hurting Plant who was forced to hold.

The 32-year-old favourite was also cut in the penultimate frame to add to his troubles, but he did rally though, with a right hand of his own rocking Resendiz, before a competitive final round saw the bout go to the scorecards.

One judge had Plant a 115-113 winner, but two tallies of 116-112 for Resendiz ensured that he pulled off the upset.

Plant, who suffered the third defeat of his professional career, having lost to Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez, confirmed that he has the contractual option to rematch Resendiz.

Charlo crushes LaManna

Jermall Charlo moved up to super middleweight, and he completely dominated his clash with Thomas LaManna, who was on the canvas three times before being halted at the start of round six.

Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) was slated to meet the aforementioned Plant next, and it remains to be seen if that fight still happens, but he kept to his side of the bargain with a one-sided win here.

LaManna (39-6-1, 18 KOs) was down in each of the third, fourth and fifth rounds before the ringside doctor advised the referee to stop the fight.

Hernandez sees off Davis

Middleweight talent Yoenli Hernandez (8-0, 7 KOs) went the distance for the first time as a professional, and he won every round of 10 against Kyrone Davis (19-4-1, 6 KOs), who was dropped in the second round.

Remaining Undercard

In the other ten rounder on the card, Isaac Lucero (17-0, 13 KOs) needed just two rounds to stop Luis Valenzuela (23-1, 20 KOs) at super welterweight, with the Mexican down twice before the conclusion.

In eight round contests, at lightweight, Curmel Moton (8-0, 6 KOs) won all available sessions against Cuba’s Renny Viamonte Mastrapa (4-2-1, 2 KOs), and Filipino super bantamweight, Carl Martin (26-0, 20 KOs) was a points winner against Francisco Pedroza Portillo (19-13-2, 11 KOs).

Daniel Blancas (13-0, 6 KOs) stayed unbeaten, winning his super middleweight bout with Kwame Ritter (11-3, 9 KOs) in round six.

In six rounders, Cristian Cangelosi (11-0, 5 KOs) took a majority decision win against Samuel Figueroa (13-3, 6 KOs) in their super welterweight bout, and at super lightweight, Justin Cardona (10-1, 5 KOs) took a split decision win over Elijah Williams (10-2, 4 KOs).

Super middleweight prospect, John Easter (9-0, 7 KOs) was a points winner against Andres Martinez (5-4, 3 KOs).

The only four rounder saw Brayan Gonzalez (4-0, 2 KOs) win in the second round against Osiel Flores (2-1, 2 KOs) at super bantamweight.
