Alfredo Angulo vs. Joachim Alcine Preview & Prediction

Angulo vs. Alcine on July 17th Helps Shape Junior Middleweight Picture

On July 17, former WBO Light Middleweight Champion Joachim Alcine will face the devastating Alfredo Angulo in a Junior Middleweight clash scheduled on the undercard of the Timothy Bradley vs. Luis Carlos Abregu Welterweight battle. The Angulo vs. Alcine fight matches a devastating puncher riding a wave of momentum (Angulo) against an experienced, quick handed boxer with great heart and skills (Alcine) and it promises to be a very interesting night in the ring when these two styles clash.

Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo

18-1 (15 KO’s)

Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico

Height: 5’10”

Reach: 69”

Last 5 Fights: Angulo has rebounded nicely since his May of 2009 loss to Kermit Cintron, in which Cintron out boxed Angulo and cruised to a unanimous decision victory. Since this loss, Angulo has rolled over his opponents, seeking and destroying them in the ring and gaining knockout victories over Gabriel Rosado, Harry Joe Yorgey and most recently, an 11th round KO over the talented Joel Julio.  Angulo has been far more active over the course of the last 3 years than his upcoming opponent has been.

Joachim “Ti Joa” Alcine

35-1 (19 KO’s)

Laval, Quebec, Canada

Height: 5’10 ½ “

Reach: 73”

Last 5 Fights:  Alcine clearly has not fought much over the course of the last 2 years and has not fought at all yet in 2010. His sole loss came 2 years ago, in which Daniel Santos knocked him out in the sixth round. Although Alcine has earned quality unanimous decision wins in his last two fights, they were his only 2 fights of 2009 and his lack of competition over the last two years may affect him negatively in this clash against the powerful Angulo.

Tale of the Tape: Angulo vs. Alcine Preview

Angulo and Alcine are both fighters of similar height, but Alcine has a significant reach advantage with a long span of 73” compared to Angulo’s 69”. Alcine doesn’t have nearly as much power as Angulo, so if Angulo is able to work his way inside and utilize his power, he should be able to eliminate this reach advantage for Alcine. However, it could come in handy for Alcine who is a talented boxer who will most likely only be able to defeat Angulo by fighting a smart fight and out boxing him. Other notable statistics include the fact that Alcine is 34 years old, while Angulo is only 27, which may become a factor if this fight reaches the later rounds.

The Momentum Factor for Angulo: Before Angulo was out-boxed by Kermit Cintron, he was touted as a great prospect and possibly even the next big thing in boxing. He was riding a streak of knockout victories coming into the fight against Cintron, and even after this loss, he continued his dominance. He has knocked out his last three opponents and clearly has not been affected negatively by his lone setback. Angulo’s confidence is high and he is determined to seek and destroy any opponent that stands in his way on his rise to the top of the division. Expect Angulo to come into the fight as his usual aggressive self. He will attempt to press the action against Alcine, who will need to find his own ways to come out on top.

Alcine’s best bet to win: Alcine is not nearly as powerful or aggressive as Angulo, and if he wants to win this fight, he must be the smarter fighter. He must utilize his reach advantage and thoroughly out-box and out think Angulo and develop a way to avoid Angulo’s onslaught. Alcine is a talented and smart boxer, and because of this there is a chance that he could use this experience and boxing skill to keep his distance and outbox Angulo. To Alcine, I would suggest that he watches tapes of Angulo’s loss to Cintron last year.

The Experience Factor: Comparing the experiences of the two fighters is interesting, considering that Angulo has fought a lot more recently, yet it is Alcine that has fought more over the course of his career. I see Angulo’s recent activity as being more of a key deciding factor than Alcine’s overall career activity. Angulo will come into the ring very seasoned, while Alcine has the chance to be a little rusty and hesitant due to his lack of recent experience.

Angulo vs. Alcine Prediction

Alcine is a talented and experienced boxer, but he won’t have a definite answer for the powerful and hungry “Perro”. After several interesting rounds, Angulo will hunt down Alcine and win by 11th round stoppage. Alcine will win his share of rounds by out boxing and out maneuvering Angulo but once Angulo gets a hold of him, he will not let go. Angulo by 11th round TKO
