There was a shocking result in the bill topper at Resorts World in Las Vegas, as Miguel Berchelt’s lightweight debut ended in disaster, with the Mexican halted in six one-sided rounds by Jeremia Nakathila.

Berchelt had served as a dominant world champion at super featherweight, but his last fight saw him brutally dismantled by Oscar Valdez in February last year, down three times before being knocked out in ten. Nakathila had challenged for interim world honours before in June last year, but was routed on the scorecards by Shakur Stevenson over twelve.

Berchelt was expected to return to action in style here, and then hunt for big fights, but he was rudely awoken by Nakathila, who made the contest one way traffic. Berchelt was constantly troubled by the man from Namibia, who found a home for his right hand with regularity, and wobbled Berchelt on multiple occasions. The third saw the favourite knocked down by a jab, and the writing was firmly on the wall from early on, and although Berchelt bravely rallied in the fifth, Nakathila quickly closed the door, and in the sixth he landed with plenty of lefts and rights, and by the end of the session, the fight was stopped by the ringside doctor.

Berchelt will now be forced to take stock and contemplate his next move in the sport, while Nakathila has now catapulted himself into contention at 135 pounds.

Jose Enrique Durantes Vivas also suffered a setback, as Eduardo Baez took a majority decision over ten rounds in their featherweight affair. A drawn score of 95-95 was overruled by scores of 98-92 and 96-94 in Baez’s favour.

At super bantamweight, Carlos Caraballo also won by majority decision, via scores of 79-73 and 77-75, which made a score of 76-76 redundant over eight rounds. Josue Vargas took a unanimous win over eight over Nicolas Pablo Demario at super lightweight. Delante Johnson stopped Sebastian Gabriel Chaves in four rounds of their welterweight affair. Haven Brady Jr also scored a four round stoppage in his featherweight contest with Jose Argel.

Dante Benjamin took all four rounds of his match with Kevin Johnson at light heavyweight, and there were split decision wins over four rounds for Arturo Popoca over Juan Hernandez Martinez at featherweight, and for Adrian Serrano against Estevan Partida.
