Despite not being a fight fans are exactly clamouring for, Jermall Charlo has been repeatedly linked to a showdown to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez over the past twelve months.
Charlo’s twin brother Jermell is the last man to lock horns with Alvarez, putting in a disappointing performance as he was drubbed over the twelve round distance by the Mexican.
Prior to that fight, PBC’s plan had reportedly been to put ‘Canelo’ in with Jermall, however his brother’s showing last September was so underwhelming that this was no longer seen as commercially viable.
However, it now seems like a clash between Charlo and the undisputed super middleweight champion could be back on the table.
Speaking on an Instagram live, ‘Hitman’ claimed he will be taking on Alvarez in September of this year.
“I’ma fight Canelo and I will get revenge for my brother in September.”
It remains unclear whether or not any agreement is in place for the USA vs Mexico scrap, or if Charlo is simply trying to speak it into existence.
Earlier this year, it appeared that the 33-year-old was in line to take on ‘Canelo’ this weekend, however this fell through due to a falling out between PBC and the Guadalajara star.
Charlo has had his fair share of issues outside of the ring and been woefully inactive, having had just one outing in almost three years.
Remarkably, he still holds the WBC middleweight world championship, despite having not defended that title since June 2021.
As for Alvarez, he takes on Jaime Munguia this Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, his first time facing a fellow Mexican in seven years.

With most fans calling for the pound-for-pound star to defend his four world titles against David Benavidez should he get past Munguia, the announcement of Charlo getting the nod instead is unlikely to go down well – should that prove to be the case.
