It was a short night of action at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, and the main event saw David Morrell Jr defeat Mike Gavronski with a third round knockout, in the last bill of 2020 for Premier Boxing Champions.

Morrell, (4-0, 3 KOs) whose WBA Interim Super Middleweight title was not on the line, after he missed weight by two pounds on Friday, showed his intent from the off, and at the end of the opening round, a power punch combination bounced Gavronski (26-4-1, 16 KOs) to the ropes, where he crumbled to the canvas.

The challenger bravely rose unsteadily, but it wasn’t too long before the fight was over, as he struggled to get to grips with the Cuban’s accuracy and spiteful punches.

The end came towards the end of round three, when a massive right uppercut snapped Gavronski’s head back and referee Jack Reiss had thankfully seen enough.

Kirkland stunned by Montiel

The undercard saw a shock result, as James Kirkland was down three times in a first round loss to Juan Macias Montiel.

Kirkland (34-3, 30 KOs) was dropped inside 30 seconds, as Montiel caught him with a short counter left hook. On the resumption, two stiff right hands from Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs) had the 36-year-old disorientated, and a follow up attack had the favourite on the canvas again.

Kirkland struggled to find his feet, but beat the count, only to run into further power punches and uppercuts, which again forced him to the deck, where the fight was waved off.

Ramos sees off Nelson in four

At Welterweight, Jesus Ramos (14-0, 13 KOs) remained undefeated with a dominant win over Naim Nelson, (14-5 1 KO) whose corner removed him from battle after four rounds.

A left hand to the head followed by a body shot dropped the 30-year-old at the end of the third, and he was down again in the next when a looping right hand drove him towards the ropes, and it was only the ropes that held him up as a second knockdown was counted.

Nelson’s corner wisely saved their charge for another day at the end of the session.

Fox back to winning ways

At Super Middleweight, Alantez Fox (27-2-1, 12 KOs) took a ten round decision over Mark Anthony Hernandez (14-4-1, 3 KOs).

Scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94 were enough for the Maryland native to pick up his first win since losing to Liam Williams in London last December.
