Gervonta Davis believes there is an element of jealousy to his ongoing feud with former promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The breakdown of their once cordial relationship has spilled out into the public domain in recent weeks with Mayweather Jr and Davis exchanging several social media barbs at each other.

The Baltimore man, who left Mayweather Promotions in 2022, felt a  a video from the Hall of Fame, former five-weight world champion, in which he suggested fighters are attempting to emulate him, was directed at him.

After ‘Tank’ claimed the 47-year-old was being held in Dubai, Mayweather responded by posting a video of Davis dancing in a bid to mock his former charge.

Davis, who later threatened to knock out Mayweather, has now explained what prompted him to retaliate that aggressively.

“A lot of people don’t know what Floyd [does],” the 29-year-old told Cigar Talk.

“He was going at me and I knew for sure he was going at me.

“That’s why I went at him.

“There’s no reason for me to go at Floyd.”

Davis has reportedly signed a six to seven fight deal with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, beginning with a defence of his WBA lightweight world title on June 15 against Frank Martin.

Mayweather signed a major deal with SHOWTIME back in 2013 when he was close to 36-years-old worth reportedly close to $200m.

Davis, arguably the current face of boxing, has now claimed that his agreement with PBC is worth more than that deal and feels Mayweather, who has competed in several exhibitions since retiring in 2017, is aggravated by the possibility that he has surpassed him as the number one name in the sport.

“Floyd feel as though I’m at that point where I’ve passed him and I’m doing it at a young age.

“When Floyd Mayweather was 29 [he wasn’t doing it like me].

“You’ll see bro.

“That deal that I’m talking about, he don’t know about that yet, that’s bigger than his deal.”
