Jared Anderson was forced to go the distance for the first time in his professional career, and survived some rocky moments before sealing a wide points win against former heavyweight world champion Charles Martin at the Huntington Centre in Toledo, Ohio.

Anderson had claimed 14 straight knockouts to start his career, and was expected to extend that against former IBF champion Martin, who had come in at short notice.

Anderson (15-0, KO14) looked as though he would be in for an early night as he dominated the first couple of rounds, and in the third, he decked Martin (29-4-1, KO26) with a cuffing counter right hand. Martin recovered well though, and had a decent fourth, and he reminded Anderson of his capabilities a round later, hurting Anderson several times, but the hot prospect stood up to the onslaught, and saw out the round when hurt. That seemed to empty the tank for Martin, as Anderson regained composure and control in the sixth, but he remained a live opponent, backing Anderson up in the eighth with clean shots. It was a big ninth for ‘Big Baby’ as he punished a tiring Martin, who had a final flourish right at the end when he landed with a left hook that wobbled Anderson with seconds remaining.

The contest went to the cards, where Anderson prevailed by two scored of 99-90, and a third at 98-91 in a good learning fight for him. Anderson defended his WBO International and WBC USA titles with his latest victory.

The undercard saw another heavyweight prospect in action, and Arslanbek Makhmudov (17-0, KO16) needed just two rounds to deal with the challenge of unbeaten Nigerian, Raphael Akpejiori (15-1, KO14). Akpejiori was down twice in the opening round, and after being down for a third time, his race was run, and the referee stopped the contest.

At super welterweight, Jahi Tucker (10-1, KO5) was upset over eight rounds, dropping a majority decision to Nicklaus Flaz (11-2, KO7), while at welterweight, Delante Johnson (9-0, KO5) took all eight rounds against Jonathan Montrel (15-2, KO10).

In six rounders, Abdullah Mason (9-0, KO8) wiped out Alex de Oliveira (20-5, KO14) in two rounds at lightweight, and light heavyweight, Dante Benjamin (7-0, KO5) needed under a round to deal with Mirady Lubanzadio Zola (4-3, KO1).

At super middleweight, DeAndre Ware (16-4-2, KO9) took a decision win against Decarlo Perez (19-9-1, KO6), and Rance Ward (8-5-1, KO2) upset Husam Al Mashhadi (6-1, KO5) in a points success. Tyler McCreary (18-2-1, KO8) took a tight points win against Deivi Julio (26-14, KO16).
