On Wednesday night, the fight many have been waiting for has officially been confirmed to take place; Floyd Mayweather vs Conor Mcgregor. The fight will take place in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena on 26th August 2017.

What started out as rumours, ended to be full of insults and long negotiations. Both parties knew the fight had to happen due to the amount of money that could be made. Now, after over a year, the fight is on!

Mayweather, 40, retired from professional boxing  after he won his 49th consecutive fight against Andre Berto. 23 months later, the gloves will be back on in a showcase fight. Mayweather announced the fight on Twitter last night.

McGregor, 28, who will be making his professional boxing debut against Mayweather, had originally visioned a clash between the two back in 2015 on a talk show and that speculation increased when McGregor applied for a boxing license in California, which was granted. The application though is yet to be completed.

Mayweather showed his interest in the cross – sports clash which would undoubtedly be a huge payday for both fighters when he revealed he would only come out of retirement for one opponent – Conor McGregor.

McGregor also went on to social media to confirm the clash in Las Vegas, picturing himself with Mayweather Snr.

Richard Sturm, president of entertainment and sports for MGM Resorts International, who owns T-Mobile Arena, shared his excitement about the fight.

“Like sports fans worldwide, we are thrilled that the Mayweather-McGregor fight has been finalized and will take place later this summer in Las Vegas.  This will be a sensational event, one that we’re all looking forward to in August. It will be an experience for fans that will, once again, prove why Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world.”

Whether the fight is to promote one another or to promote each sport, many people have been enthralled by the prospect and have been glued to social media and sports channels awaiting confirmation. And now Las Vegas will be the setting of a once in a lifetime bout.

Whilst speaking to Fox Sports, Dana White, president of UFC ,pretty much told us why the fight is happening.

“It’s definitely the biggest fight ever in combat sports history, and probably going to be the biggest payday ever. “Let’s just put it this way – all sides involved are pretty happy with their deals!”
