Sunny Edwards made a debut under the Matchroom banner, and he made a successful defence of his IBF flyweight title with a clear points win over Chile’s Andres Campos at the OVO Arena.

Edwards was making the fourth defence of the title that he won with a superb points win against Moruti Mthalane in April 2021, while Campos was stepping up to world championship level for the first time.

Edwards (20-0, KO4) began the contest with plenty of showmanship and bravado, but it was a close contest, with both men having their successes in the first half of the bout. Campos (15-1, KO4) had a strong sixth, and was giving as good as he was getting, but Edwards wrested back control in the eighth, unloading with a barrage of shots. Edwards looked like he was a shade ahead though, first to the punch with regularity, but Campos wouldn’t go away quietly, keeping competitive throughout.

The contest went to the cards as expected, and it was the champion that retained by three identical scores of 117-111.

Johnny Fisher (9-0, KO8) faced his first southpaw test, and came through with flying colours, stopping Emilio Salas (7-5-1, KO3) inside a round.

Ellie Scotney (7-0, KO0) was crowned the new IBF super bantamweight champion, as she handily outscored Cherneka Johnson (15-2, KO6). Scotney controlled the action in the main, and was judged a winner by two scores of 98-92, and a third score of 97-93.

Cheavon Clarke (6-0, KO5) took the British title eliminator at cruiserweight, as he stopped David Jamison (10-3, KO7) in five rounds. Jamieson was down in the fourth, and a massive right uppercut dropped him again in round five, and the referee waved the contest off.

Nina Hughes (6-0, KO2) proved too good for Katie Healy (6-1, KO0), as she defended her WBA bantamweight title for the first time with a landslide points win. Hughes took a wide victory by two tallies of 100-90 and a third score of 99-91.

The British super featherweight title eliminator was expected to steal the show, and it didn’t disappoint, as Reece Bellotti (16-5, KO13) took a ten round decision against Youssef Khoumari (15-2-1, KO6). The Watford man came through by scores of 97-93, 97-94 and 96-94.

George Liddard (3-0, KO3) was due to go over the six round distance for the first time, but he needed less than a round to defeat Nikolas Dzurnak (5-4-2, KO5) in their middleweight encounter. The Czech was down three times in all.

Shannon Ryan (5-0, KO0) made a Matchroom debut, and won all eight rounds at super flyweight against Martina Bernile (5-2-1, KO1).

Muhammad Ali (2-0, KO0) remained unbeaten, taking all four rounds at super bantamweight against Bryan Castro (2-6-1, KO1).
