Efrain Esquivias wants to challenge Leo Santa Cruz next

Not content with his stunning ninth-round victory over Rafael Marquez in early September, newly ranked WBC #15 super bantamweight Efrain Esquivias is anxious to get back in the ring and fight for a world title.

“The super bantamweight division is filled with great fighters and champions, but the one guy that I would love to tangle with in the ring is WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz,” Esquivias said. “It will be an exciting fight for the fans, I like to throw a lot of punches and so does Santa Cruz. It would be a great fight.”

With recent news indicating that bantamweight title holder Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno passed on a bout with Santa Cruz in favor of a fight with Koki Kameda later this year or in early 2014; this consequently opened the door for Esquivias’ long awaited title shot.

“This is why I’ve been putting all the hours in the gym and staying active in between fights, it’s for this opportunity,” Esquivias said. “I have worked hard to fight a ring legend like Rafael Marquez and I think I have made my mark to get a shot at Santa Cruz. I’m willing to step up to the challenge and I hope Leo is too. Let’s make it happen.”

Esquivias will make his first public appearance since defeating Marquez, this Friday, Sept. 27, at the “Path to Glory” show promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif. From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Esquivias will sign autographs and will be available for media interviews.

He will sit ringside in support of his fellow Thompson Boxing stablemate Mauricio Herrera (19-3, 7 KOs) of Riverside, Calif., who headlines the show against the hard-hitting Miguel Angel Huerta (27-10-1, 18 KOs) of Mexico in an 8-round fight.
