Jessie Vargas Headlines vs. Walter Esrada July 8th

After exciting events in April and May, Golden Boy Promotions returns to Buffalo Bill’s Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, Nev. on Friday, July 8, for another explosive night of world-class boxing when unbeaten local hero Jessie Vargas of Las Vegas steps into the ring to face seasoned veteran Walter Estrada in the main event of TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate.”

In the six round co-feature, unbeaten Southern California junior middleweights Alfonso Blanco and Cleveland H. Ishe meet in a battle for west coast bragging rights.

Long considered by most to be a top 140-pound prospect, 22-year-old Jessie Vargas (15-0, 8 KO’s) turned any doubters into believers in April when he needed just one round to finish former World Champion “Vicious” Vivian Harris.  The win catapulted Vargas into the consciousness of fans and the boxing community.  Considering his remarkable ring savvy, power and exciting style, the Las Vegas product will be getting plenty of big opportunities to shine in the future, but before that, he has to get past a tough test in Estrada.

Miami’s Walter Estrada (39-14-1, 25 KO’s) is boxing’s unofficial dream crusher who in the past year has put together stirring wins over top-rated prospects Verquan Kimbrough and Tyrese Hendrix as well as former World Champion Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell.  Estrada has the talent and confidence to beat any fighter in the world on any given night.  A power-punching southpaw originally from Colombia, the 35-year-old veteran has no doubt that he has everything it takes to hand Vargas his first defeat on July 8.

2008 Venezuelan Olympian Alfonso Blanco (5-0, 2 KO’s) knows more than most young prospects about competing at the highest levels of the game, but the 25-year-old is taking his time in learning the professional level of the sport, with spectacular results thus far.  Now making his home in Oxnard, California, Blanco has already won three bouts in 2011, most recently shutting out Juan Carlos Diaz in April.  On July 8, he will look to keep his unbeaten streak going against a fellow undefeated fighter in Ishe.

Los Angeles’ Cleveland H. Ishe (3-0, 1 KO) enters the ring on July 8 without the fanfare of his former amateur star opponent, but he comes in with just as much determination to put on a show for the fans and keep his perfect record intact.  A professional for a little over a year, Ishe is coming off of a four-round win over Jason Montgomery in March and would like nothing better than to kick off his summer with the biggest victory of his young career.

Vargas vs. Estrada, a 10-round junior welterweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Roy Englebrecht Promotions’ special edition of “Fight Club Primm,” and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and AT&T.  Doors open at 6:30pm PT, the first bell rings at 7:00pm PT and the TeleFutura broadcast begins at 11:30pm ET / PT (10:30pm CT).

Tickets, priced at $50 (Floor) and $20 (General Admission), are on sale now and may be purchased at the Star of the Desert Arena Box Office or online at www.primmvalleyresorts.com.

Fans at home can also be part of the action by participating in Cinturón Tecate and voting for the fighter in the main event who displayed the most character in the ring by sending a text message to 55333. Voting will be open through the end of the weekend.
