Mayweather vs. Mosley Picks from the Writers and Others on the Web

Before all of the big fights, we at ProBoxing-Fans.com like to collect picks and predictions from all of our boxing writers, as well as some others around the web as well. Here you can take a look at all of our Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley predictions to see how the fight will turn out. Just how many people are picking Mosley to win?

Rich Thomas: While I have learned the hard way not to bet against Floyd Mayweather, I think in this case Mayweather has bitten off much more than he can chew. By balking at fighting Pacquiao, he has maneuvered himself into an even worse match-up. The simplest, most direct way to cut through the crap and make the case for Mosley is this: if you look at Mayweather’s resume, would you pick anyone he beat at 140 or 147 to give Mosley even a hard time at that relative stage in their careers? I am going with the sugar-sweet victory on this one. Mosley TKO10.

Scott Levinson: I think the odds are over-inflated in Mayweather’s favor. He’s not recently battle-tempered, is getting to an age when you start to see slippage, and is facing a worthwhile opponent who knows how to win big fights. Floyd should be no more than a 2-1 favorite. Finally, he’s facing an opponent that is fast, hard-hitting, and durable. Sugar Shane seems like a reasonable upset candidate. It would make me feel a lot better if Mosley had fought since beating Margarito almost a year-and-a-half ago. A layoff like that might have killed all the positive momentum he built by winning such a big fight. Could he revert to the form that characterized his pre-Margarito run?

I think these men are somewhat equal in a physical sense, with Floyd being a little faster and Shane hitting a little harder. I think the mental side of the game is where Mayweather might get a little separation from Mosley. I see Floyd using his better anticipation, ring generalship, and ring I.Q. to edge a majority of the rounds and win a competitive unanimous decision in the 117-111, 116-112 neighborhood.

Justin Landis:  I believe that Mosley has the tools to beat Mayweather. Floyd is lightning fast and his anticipation and overall boxing skills are second to none, but a fast, attacking fighter with great punch precision like Mosley could really give Floyd trouble. I liken this to the Mayweather vs. Judah fight where in the first few rounds, Judah came to fight and was pressing the action, going after Floyd and landing precision punches. I feel as if Mosley can do the same but consistently over the course of the entire fight, especially after his brilliant performance against Antonio Margarito. Floyd will win his share of rounds by using his uncanny ability to be one step ahead of his opponents at all times, but in the end, Mosley will press the action, score a knockdown and win the fight by Unanimous Decision. May 1st will be the night of May’s first loss and Sugar Shane will emerge victorious.

Jake Emen: I saw Miguel Cotto largely outbox Shane Mosley for the duration of a 12 round contest, until tiring towards the end. Floyd Mayweather is faster, has better boxing skills and timing and will never be fatigued. While Mosley is riding high right now, he also is coming off the longest layoff of his career, a problem when you’re facing the slickest guy you’ve ever met in the ring. He can absolutely use his pressure and power to get Mayweather off of his game, but I don’t think he can do it consistently enough to win the fight. By the late rounds, Mayweather will be using his counter punching to dominate the previously close affair, as Mosley is forced to upon up even more. Mayweather by unanimous decision.

Dana Miller: On May 1, 2010, the fight between Mayweather and Mosley will boil down to two things.  Either Mayweather will sit back and try to potshot Mosley, or Mosley will make Mayweather fight.  If Mayweather is able to sit back and dictate the fight with his defense then this fight will be nothing more than another Mayweather shutout.  If Mosley, however, is able to make Mayweather uncomfortable with throwing multiple jabs at a time and getting to the ribcage of Mayweather, then this fight will live up to all of the expectations and all of the hype.  This fight is one of the most anticipated fight in a long time, and this could be one of the greatest fights of all time, except one thing, I don’t believe the hype. Prediction:  Mayweather by Unanimous Decision.

Ben Weisman: Will May 1st be the night where the dream finally comes true for the legions of Floyd haters? In short, no.  Mosley is a great fighter, a HOF fighter, without a doubt.  But Floyd Mayweather is all wrong for Sugar Shane Mosley.  Mosley struggles with clever counter punchers who excel at defense. Winky Wright anyone?  Arguably Floyd’s greatest talent is the ability to hit and not get hit.  He’ll come out ready to pot shot Mosley for 12 straight rounds, outclassing him at times in the process.  For the first 5-6 rounds I see Floyd being able to set the tempo of the fight to his liking.  Mosley will try to box with Floyd, unsuccessfully. Mosley will get frustrated and start loading up with power punches.  This will only make Mayweather’s job easier.  Mosley’s accurate punching as well as his ability to take a punch should give him the chance to have some good moments during the fight but Floyd is just too fast, too clever and just plain old too good for Shane. Mayweather UD.

Garret Gonzalez (Fight Game Blog): I think Mayweather wins by decision. To me, this is the perfect situation for Mayweather. He faces an older (though still hungry) Shane Mosley. He faces an undoubtedly clean Shane Mosley. Those two things have to switch the fight into Mayweather’s favor. Pundits may say that Mosley is just as fast as Mayweather, but how patient can he be? Fighting Mayweather is a marathon and not a sprint. He’s not going to sit there waiting to be hit like Margarito was. I think the fight will be fairly close, but by the end, I don’t think we’ll question who won the fight. It’s going to be Money May.

Anthony Ventre (Chronic Boxing): Picking a winner for Mosely v. Mayweather isn’t exactly fun when you like both fighters to win.  Only it doesn’t work that way. The best thing to like about this fight is that feints, fakes, posing, tricks of the trade—none of that stuff will work.   Neither of these guys can be fooled. Mosely won’t be suckered into following Mayweather back to a corner the way a distracted and tired Ricky Hatton was when Mayweather put his lights out in the 10th.   Mayweather won’t be able to so easily control the fight, roll his shoulders, and pick his times to fight or slip sideways as he has in past fights.

Mosely will press hard in the early rounds, and even punches caught on Floyd Jr.’s arms will hurt. Mosely could catch lightning in a bottle. It ends in one of two ways.  Mosely gets old in the late rounds or Mayweather gets stopped before the 8th round.  Look for dynamite in the early rounds, and Shane to win.  Look for slow bleeding into the late rounds, and Mosely to lose.

Scott Dryden (Pro Fighting Fans): Shane Mosley is the consummate professional.  He is a legend with a chip on his shoulder and can cement his legacy with a monumental victory over Floyd Mayweather.  Mayweather has continued his barrage of insults on Mosley and has proven his wit hasn’t left him.  Watching HBO’s 24/7, the best sports show on television, reminds me of just how great Mayweather truly is and not just because he says so.  His quickness and hand speed are incredible.  Despite Sugar Shane’s experience and desire Mayweather will walk away with a victory via a unanimous decision.

There you have it, clearly the majority think that Floyd Mayweather will beat Shane Mosley, although we have two writers picking Mosley for the upset, and another that’s undecided with how it’s going to play out.
