Alvarado vs. Provodnikov Rankings Updates

Provodnikov obviously has to soar up the top 10 at 140 lbs with this win. Previously, he was unranked in the division, coming off a welterweight fight against Timothy Bradley. So how high does he climb, and how far does Alvarado, formerly number 3 in the top 10 of the junior welterweight division, fall down the rankings with the loss? It’s his second stoppage defeat over the past three grueling matches.

Quotes

“This is my best dream come true,” said Provodnikov, who was able to realize the monumental moment with his mother sitting ringside.

“I am a champion like Leonard and Duran. To be a world champion, you must take risks and i did that by coming into his hometown. I give Alvarado a lot of credit, he is a real man, a real champion.”

Provodnikov was guided in the corner by Marvin Somodio as chief trainer Freddie was in the Philippines with Manny Pacquiao.

“I needed to win this for Freddie. I miss him.”

On the conclusion, Provodnikov finished, “I made him not want to fight me anymore.”

Provodnikov of Beryozovo, Russia is now 23-2 with 16 knockouts.

In the locker room after the fight, a despondent Mike Alvarado, who falls to 34-2, offered no excuses. He said the fight just played out the way he did and that Provodnikov deserves the credit for beating him.

On the undercard, Juan Diaz continued his comeback with a unanimous decision victory. It’s nice to see Diaz back in the ring, although who knows how far he’ll be able to take it.
