Teofimo Lopez made the move to super lightweight, and claimed the vacant WBO International and NABF belts with a dominant seventh round stoppage of the overmatched Pedro Campa at Resorts World in Las Vegas.

Lopez was coming off the first loss of his professional career in November last year, where he was upset by George Kambosos Jr, which cost him his WBA (Super), WBO and IBF lightweight titles. He was jumping into the 140 pond waters here against the limited Mexican Campa, a man that had only fought outside of his homeland on one other occasion.

Lopez (17-1, KO13) began this one with authority, landing with his jab almost immediately, and this set up his attacks in the early going. By the third, Campa (34-2-1, KO23) was clearly out of his depth, as Lopez landed with an eye catching uppercut, as well as straight right hand that rocked the head back of the visitor. A left hook visibly hurt Campa in round four, but the underdog did fire back a round later, and wasn’t lacking in heart. By round six, Campa’s eye was almost shut, and the writing was firmly on the wall. He decided to fight fire with fire in the seventh, and this would prove his downfall. Lopez got the better of an exchange early in the round, and dropped Campa with a combination. Campa survived the count, but an uppercut got through on the resumption, and a follow up attack on the ropes forced the referee to jump in to end the fight.

Lopez now plans on further world titles at his new weight, with a date in New York at the end of the year mooted.

“Being at 135 was killing my body” said Lopez post-fight.

“We want Josh Taylor, we want all these guys. We want (Regis) Prograis. We want (Jose) Zepeda. We want all the belts”.

“We’re gonna be in the big room this time, Madison Square Garden on December 10th”.

On the undercard, Xander Zayas (14-0, KO10) remained unbeaten, and took the vacant WBO NABO super welterweight title, as he dropped Elias Espadas (22-5, KO15) in the opening round, before closing the show in round five.

Andres Cortes (18-0, KO10) also stayed undefeated, taking a dominant points win over eight at super featherweight against Abraham Montoya (20-4-1, KO14). Cortes took 79-73 verdicts across the board. Also at super featherweight, Enrique Vivas (22-2, KO11) took a split decision over eight against Edy Valencia Mercado (19-8-6, KO7).

In six round attractions, Troy Isley (7-0, KO4) made it seven wins from seven at middleweight, as he won a wide decision against Victor Toney (6-2-1, KO5), and at featherweight, Olympic Silver medallist Duke Ragan (7-0, KO1) took a competitive points win against fellow unbeaten D’Angelo Fuentes (7-1, KO4). At super lightweight, Omar Rosario (8-0, KO2) took 58-56 tallies from all three judges to defeat Esteban Munoz (6-2, KO4).

The sole four rounder came at lightweight, where Charlie Sheehy (4-0, KO3) took every round against Juan Manuel Castaneda Valle (2-1-2, KO0).
