O’Shaquie Foster claimed the vacant WBC super featherweight title in some style, as he snapped the long unbeaten run of Rey Vargas to take a decision win at the Alamodome in Texas.

Vargas had previously reigned as WBC champion at super bantamweight and featherweight, and was unbeaten in 36 contest going into this one, while Foster was on a nine fight winning streak after two early career losses.

Foster (20-2, KO11) unexpectedly dominated the fight, while Vargas (36-1, KO22) paid for a slow start to the contest. Foster was landing off the jab with solid hook, and by the third round, Vargas was cut from what looked like a clash of heads. Foster’s quicker footwork was winning the day, with Vargas unable to get a foothold, and by halfway, it looked as though the American had arguably won every round. The Mexican had his best round to date in the seventh, landing to the body of his opponent, but Foster quickly regained control. Although Vargas had a decent ninth, Foster closed out the championship rounds with authority, and as the bout went to the cards, the result was in little doubt.

Foster became the new champion by scores of 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112.

Mario Barrios (27-2, KO18) returned to winning ways, taking the WBC Continental Americas welterweight title by stopping Jovanie Santiago (14-3-1, KO10) in the eighth round of a scheduled ten. A body shot dropped Santiago in round eight, and after he survived the count, Barrios went for the kill, and a powerful attack forced Santiago’s corner to throw the towel in.

Lenier Pero (9-0, KO6) defended his WBA Fedelatin heavyweight title for the third time, as he won the battle of unbeatens with an eighth round stoppage of Viktor Vykhryst (11-1, KO7). The Ukrainian was ahead on two cards at the time of the stoppage, but Pero sunk in a body shot that forced Vykhryst to turn away, and with him unable to defend himself, the fight was waved off.

At lightweight, Claudio Marrero (27-5, KO19) dropped Gonzalo Fuenzalida (12-2, KO3) three times on the way to a fifth round win, and at middleweight, Eumir Felix Marcial (4-0, KO2) scored two knockdowns in a second round victory against Ricardo Ruben Villalba (20-8-1, KO8).

The rest of the card featured four round contests.

Fabian Diaz (4-0, KO2) took less than a round to take care of Eleazar Mendietta (0-2) at lightweight, and debutant super welterweight David Whitmire (1-0, KO1) did the same against Keith Foreman (0-1).

At light heavyweight, Manuel Sifuentes (0-1) lost on debut via majority decision against Jesus Ponce Aguilar (1-1, KO0), and heavyweight hope Dainier Pero (3-0, KO2) took a decision win against Daniel Zavala (2-2-2, KO0). Debutant James Wohlschlegel (1-0, KO0) won a split decision at light heavyweight against Daniel Heinan (0-2).
