The Boxing Rumor Mill – Canelo vs. Cotto close to finalized?

According to stories on Yahoo! Sports and RingTV.com, Miguel Cotto has been offered $10 million by Golden Boy head honcho Richard Schaefer for a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2014. This adds further fuel to the fire that Canelo vs. Cotto is not only in the works, but is close to being finalized. It would be a huge payday for Cotto, and an even larger opportunity on the big stage to add an extra piece to his legacy and his legend.

Cotto and new trainer Freddie Roach have made it known they’re looking for big fights against the best only, and the same has been said from team Canelo. They aren’t trying to rebuild their fighter slowly, they want a marquee fight against a big name, too.

Canelo’s team has previously said that he will be planning to keep a busy schedule and fight three times in 2014. Those three dates are at least already tentatively known: March 8, July 26 and November 22. We’ll see if Cotto’s name gets written in on the calendar for that first scheduled bout.

Canelo vs. Cotto would be great for fight fans and for the sport, and it would certainly do big business as well. While we don’t know all the details of the offer, and certainly there will be some issues to work out in negotiations, it would be hard to imagine Cotto and his team turning down $10 million to face Canelo Alvarez under any circumstances.
