This past Friday ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” co-main event featured an aggressive Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez against Gabriel “The Ghost” Tolmajyan in an extremely close fight at Morongo Resort & Casino.   The featherweight war went the full 8-round distance and ringside judges scored the fight unanimously in favor of Lopez.  Two ringside judges scored it 78-74 twice and 79-73. Stated Edmond Tarverdyan, Tolmajyan’s trainer,  “To be honest, it was a very close fight.  If you look at a boxing match as who landed the cleaner shots, I believe Gabriel won but the judges have their own decision.

This is the second loss on record for Tolmajyan whose record dropped to 12-2-1.

Lopez, whose record improved to 17-0, stated: “My corner told me he doesn’t like to be pressured, so go on him, go on him,” “My corner said jump on him.”

The La Puente featherweight had a game plan in knowing to expect that Tolmajyan would come on strong in the early rounds due to his weight issues.

Continued the active Lopez, “I felt him strong in the beginning,” Lopez said. “But I knew he would get tired because he was overweight.”

Tolmajyan weighed in at 128.5 pounds for the 127-pound fight.

Referring to the later rounds, Tarverdyan had this to say of his concern about Tolmajyan’s focus, “He wasn’t as aggressive and he was losing his focus, I think it was a little more lack of concentration.”
