Cuban heavyweight Lenier Pero topped the bill at Caribe Royale in Orlando, and he took a 10-round decision win against Britain’s Jordan Thompson on Saturday.

Pero (13-0, 8 KOs) returned after a lay-off in April, where he completed 10 rounds for the first time in a clear points win against Detrailous Webster in Orlando, while Thompson (15-2, 12 KOs) was last seen over two years ago, losing heavily in four rounds to IBF world champion Jai Opetaia.

Pero was quick out of the blocks here, beating the visitor to the punch in round one, and then catching the Englishman to the mid-section with meaty shots in the second round.

Thompson responded with blows of his own to the 32-year-old’s body in the third, but the Cuban replied in kind, and Thompson looked pretty unfocused as he chatted to Jarrell Miller amongst others at ringside, as well as his corner as he allowed Pero to bank round after round.

With ’Troublesome’ battling rust, he seemed content to just coast through the contest, but with Pero himself slowing in the seventh, Thompson had his successes, and also benefitted from a Pero point deduction for a low blow.

The pair traded to the body in the eighth, and ‘El Justiciero’ then found a second wind and in the ninth a combination buzzed Thompson and drove him towards the ropes.

The 32-year-old gamely held on, and also saw the final round out to complete the 10-round distance.

Two scores of 96-93 and a third at 97-93 saw Pero declared the winner and the new WBA Continental champion.

Pero is ranked at three by the WBA behind ‘super’ champion, Oleksandr Usyk and ‘regular’ titlist, Kubrat Pulev and the Cuban called out the aforementioned Miller post-fight.

Brown blasts out Valera

Pat Brown (5-0, 5 KOs) impressed again and remained perfect, with the Manchester cruiserweight blasting out Felix Valera in two rounds.

Valera (24-9, 21 KOs), who had been the distance with now-undisputed light heavyweight champion, Dmitry Bivol earlier in his career, was on the canvas multiple times before the bout was waved off.

Remaining Undercard

Yoelvis Gomez (9-1-1, 7 KOs) was another Cuban in action, but the super welterweight prospect was held to a draw over ten rounds against Antraveous Ingram (12-0-1, 6 KOs).

In six-round action, amateur starlet Omari Jones (4-0, 4 KOs) was a third-round winner, and became the first to stop Tanzania’s Yusuph Metu (12-3, 9 KOs) in their super welterweight encounter.

Also at super welterweight, Nishant Dev (4-0, 2 KOs) took a points win in his meeting with Juan Carlos Campos Medina (4-3, 3 KOs) and unbeaten featherweight, Carlos Jamil De Leon Castro (6-0, 5 KOs) was a fourth-round winner against Colombia’s Wilner Soto (24-22, 13 KOs).

The only four-rounder came at bantamweight, where debutant Ryan Santiago (1-0, 1 KO) took a second-round victory against Mario Hernandez Betancourt (0-3).
