Martirosyan on Short List to Face Cotto

Undefeated junior middleweight sensation Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (28-0 17 KOs) is thrilled to hear that he is in the running to land a mega fight versus Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto (35-2 28 KOs).  Pawel Wolak and Rigoberto Alvarez are also reported to be in the running.

“Cotto is a real warrior who likes facing big challenges. No disrespect to Wolak or Canelo’s (Alvarez) brother but I think Cotto would rather face an undefeated hungry fighter like me than those guys that have lost before,” the confident Martirosyan said. “I think the fans would rather see him take on a guy like me instead of those guys.”

March 12th is the date that has been reported for Cotto’s ring return.  It has also been reported that the fight will take place in Cotto’s homeland. After catching wind of the negotiations, Martirosyan immediately returned to the gym to get ready for what would potentially be the biggest fight of his career,  “I have no problem going to Puerto Rico.  They are some of the most passionate boxing fans in the world and I am sure Miguel and I will put on a great show.”

Martirosyan is ready to prove his critics wrong and believes this is his time to shine. A win over Cotto would move the Glendale, California based fighter into boxing’s elite category.

“I know this is a big step up for me but I feel ready for it.  My team with Freddie and Alex knows I am ready,” the Armenian explained, “This will give me a chance to show the world how good I am.”

Martirosyan’s manager Steven Feder of Standing Eight Management is confident a deal can be reach with Cotto. Even if a deal can’t be made at this juncture, Feder knows 2011 is Martirosyan’s year to shine, “Obviously we want the Cotto fight but regardless, there is no doubt that Vanes will be fighting for a world title fight this year.”

Vanes has been knocking on the doors of the elite fighters in the junior middleweight division for quite some time now. If no one steps up and takes the challenge, Vanes will soon be knocking the doors down.

“Either we’ll get the guys we want or we will be the mandatory opponent and the champions will have no choice but to fight us or get stripped of their belt. This is the year Vanes makes his mark,” said Martirosyan’s manager.
