Canelo vs Mbilli results: Canelo Alvarez became world champion again, as he captured the WBC super middleweight title with a dominant unanimous decision win over Christian Mbilli in Riyadh on Saturday.

Canelo dominated a surprisingly passive Mbilli throughout the 12 rounds, running out the victor by scores of 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110.

In the weeks leading up to Canelo vs Mbilli, there had been some doubts over the whether the card would go ahead, as a result of missile attacks from Houthis on Saudi Arabia.

As a result, the card lost a bout. Lindolfo Delgado withdrew from his scheduled IBF super lightweight title clash with Arthur Biyarslanov. However, the rest of the card travelled to Riyadh.

Alvarez had not been in the ring since losing his then-undisputed super middleweight crown to Terence Crawford last September. Although, it became clear from the outset that he was a level about the Frenchman.

Canelo dominates Mbilli

Mbilli, known for his high output and relentless pace, appeared hesitant to trade with Canelo and in the third round Alvarez urged him to exchange while he sat on the ropes.

The 31-year-old was having some success. However, Alvarez was the more accurate and sharper fighter.

Mbilli’s attacks were limited to short bursts at the end of rounds and Canelo was well on his way to becoming champion again by the halfway mark.

The 36-year-old landed his best shot of the fight in the seventh round. An uppercut jolted Mbilli’s head back and follow-up combinations had him concerned.

Canelo landing some rapid combinations in round eight and things got worse for the champion after he was harshly deducted a point for rabbit punches by referee Hector Afu.

Mbilli was far too predictable and Alvarez was coasting to victories. The four-division world champion wasn’t particularly busy himself, but was doing enough to win rounds with sharper work and superior defence.

Mbilli needed a knockout to retain his belt. But, it never appeared likely. After landing a few accurate right hands in the 12th round, he was caught himself with some hurtful combinations in a close final round.

The result was a mere formality heading to the scorecards. Scores of 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110 confirmed Alvarez’s return to the summit of the super middleweight division.

“It feels like my first title,” Canelo told DAZN post-fight. “I’m so proud.

“He didn’t throw a lot of punches, because it’s difficult to throw punches with me.”

Alvarez refused to be drawn on who could be next. WBC interim champion, Lester Martinez and former WBO titlist, Hamzah Sheeraz watched on from ringside and could be potential opponents.

Munguia, Espinoza retain world titles

Jaime Munguia survived a scare before successfully defending his WBA super middleweight world title for the first time with a unanimous decision win over Nikita Zon.

Munguia became a two-division world champion with victory over Armando Resendiz in May. However, the Mexican was forced into a wild shootout early on.

Munguia staggered Zon in round four and had Zon stumbling at the end of the fifth round. However, the Mexican was rocked and shaken to his boots in the sixth round. A barrage of blows from Zon had him backed up to the ropes.

However, the 30-year-old survived the onslaught and Zon appeared to completely empty his gas tank.

Munguia was able to navigate the second half of the fight and in the end deserved his victory. Two scores of 117-111 and another at 116-112 confirmed his victory.

Rafael Espinoza retained his WBO featherweight world title for the fifth time.

His opponent Ricardo Blandon was pulled out during the third round due to a cut, which was caused by a punch.
