Middleweight kingpin Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (50-2-2, 28KO’s) and England’s undefeated interim WBA middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11KO’s) were both well under the 30-day weight limit for their upcoming WBC middleweight championship bout on April 27 in Martinez’ home country of Argentina. Martinez-Murray, taking place at the country’s famed 50,000-seat Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, in Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina, will be shown live on HBO World Championship Boxing®, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.
The Martinez-Murray world championship telecast, which begins at 8:30 p.m ET/PT, will be produced and distributed live by HBO. It marks Martinez’s first time fighting since returning from knee surgery, and his victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. It’s also a massive homecoming fight for him, and the first time he’ll be competing in Argentina since he’s been a true top-level fighter.
Also notable for Martinez vs. Murray and the WBC is that the sanctioning body will be using instant replay for the fight. Martinez vs. Murray is a decent scrap, but the way it shakes out will more importantly have an effect on the rest of the division and who fights who later on in 2013. Most fight fans, of course, are hoping that it will be Sergio Martinez vs. Gennady Golovkin.
