Weekend Results: Segura KOs Calderon Again, Helenius KOs Peter, Huck Wins

While the big networks took a break from boxing action this weekend, there were plenty of fights all around the globe, including a few with major implications for the sport. In a rematch between two of the sport’s best little guys, Giovani Segura proved once again that he’s too young, strong and powerful for Ivan Calderon. This fight took less time than the first, and Segura closed the show with a body shot in round three. The official time of the bout was just 1:39 of the third.

It further legitimizes Segura’s claim to the throne in his division, while for Calderon, his long reign is officially over, and it may just be time to hang up the gloves. For a guy at his size and weight to be effective for so long was amazing enough as it is, and for a fighter with such an extreme lack of power, once some of that timing, slickness and stamina goes, there’s not much left to fall back on.

Huck vs. Nakash & Helenius vs. Peter

In a co-feature in Germany, Robert Helenius knocked out Sam Peter in the 9th round of their heavyweight affair. He started the end with a left hook, and then followed up with another barrage that led to the stoppage. Peter was out of shape and slow, but Helenius was able to capitalize and score the biggest win of his career to date.

In the headlining bout, Marco Huck made yet another successful cruiserweight title defense. He won a decision from previously undefeated by entirely untested Ran Nakash of Israel. The scores were 118-110 twice and 116-112. Nakash actually made a spirited effort, applying pressure and getting in Huck’s face, while Huck turned into the boxer and used his superior movement, speed and skills to win the affair. Nakash had been a late sub for Giacobbe Fragomeni.
