Smith vs Puello results: Dalton Smith retained his WBC super lightweight world title for the first time with a split decision victory over former world champion, Alberto Puello in Sheffield on Saturday.

Smith was made to work hard throughout by mandatory challenger Puello, but the Sheffield man emerged victorious to defend his title at a raucous Utilita Arena.

The 29-year-old knocked out Subriel Matias in five rounds to capture the belt in Brooklyn in January.

Meanwhile, Puello lost his world title to Matias last July. The pair were scheduled to meet in June, but Smith withdrew with an elbow injury.

It was a cagey opener. A left hand from Puello through the champion’s guard was the best of the action. Smith began to let his hands go in round two. He connected with at least three right hands, while Puello continued to probe with his piston-like jab.

Smith managed to get on the inside. But, he did have to ship a sharp left hand in the fourth, despite a fairly dominant round.

After a strong fifth round, the visitor snapped the head back of Smith in the sixth and got the better of the exchanges, with little to separate the pair at the halfway stage.

Puello nicked a tight seventh. However, Smith got the better of another close eighth round. The home favourite landed some accurate shots to both head and body.

The rounds remained highly-competitive and difficult to score. Both men were having plenty of individual success without necessarily stamping their authority on the contest.

Smith upped the ante in the 11th round. The 29-year-old was able to connect with sharp right hands.

However, Puello countered well, snapping the champion’s head back with his razor-sharp left hand.

The action was frantic in the final round, as both men sensed the fight was close. Smith was cut on his right cheek, but did not allow this to deter his efforts.

‘Thunder’ showboated and even started Ali Shuffling, believing the fight was won. Although, the result seemed anything less than a formality, as the bout went to the scorecards.

Two judges scored the fight 115-113 for Smith, overruling a third judge who scored it 116-112 in favour of Puello.

Promoter Eddie Hearn called for a unification with WBO champion, Shakur Stevenson post-fight.

Visioli beats Hughes, Atang secures another KO

Elsewhere on the Smith vs Puello report, Giorgio Visioli saw off his toughest test to date. The 23-year-old overcame Maxi Hughes by majority decision.

Visioli was given a stern test by the former IBO lightweight champion. However, the unbeaten southpaw was a step ahead and sharper than the Doncaster man.

The Aldershot man did suffer a nasty cut in the eighth round. But, it played little bearing with Visioli victory appearing a formality as it went to the scorecards.

A surprising 95-95 scorecard was overruled by two scores of 96-94 to hand Visioli the win and the vacant WBC International Silver lightweight crown.

Meanwhile on the Smith vs Puello results, heavyweight prospect Leo Atang secured his sixth win of 2026 with a first round demolition of Jonathan Exequiel Vergara.

Atang floored Vergara three times, before referee Jamie Kirkpatrick called off the bout. Atang will fight for the 10th time as a professional in Monaco on December 12.

Ryan dropped Dolan twice before referee Howard Foster waved off the contest. The 29-year-old won the British super flyweight title.

Ed Hardy went all eight rounds in victory over Diego Alberto Ruiz at featherweight. Meanwhile, Joe Hayden scored an early knockdown en route to a points win over Will Harrison in their welterweight clash.
